As summer winds down and we prepare for the transitions of fall, there's no better time to establish new routines that promote balance and wellness. This month, we're focusing on the power of routines and how building sustainable habits can lead to a more balanced life.

Have you ever wondered why some habits stick while others fade away? The secret lies in understanding how habits are formed. According to research, habits are created through a process called "cue, routine, reward." A cue triggers the habit, the routine is the behavior itself, and the reward is the positive outcome that reinforces the habit. By making small, incremental changes, you can create lasting habits that significantly impact your well-being.

Building a balanced routine means integrating physical fitness, mental wellness, and self-care into your daily life. Here are some practical tips to help you get started:

Morning Routine:

  • Wake Up Early: Start your day with a few minutes of quiet reflection or meditation.

  • Exercise: Engage in a short workout to energize your body and mind. I like to start with “circles” – a form of embodiment practice where you make circles through each joint in the body, starting with the feet and ankles and moving all the way up to the head and neck, even including the eyeballs.

  • Healthy Breakfast: Fuel your body with a nutritious meal. Pre-workout fuel can be a protein shake, a banana with almond butter, or toast with almond butter. Follow it up with a nutrient-dense breakfast that includes at least 30 grams of protein.

Evening Routine:

  • Unplug: Disconnect from electronic devices at least an hour before bed. This is a game changer. I also like to sleep with a sleep mask, which I’ve found deepens my sleep.

  • Wind Down: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or gentle yoga. I do a breathing meditation before bed; it’s a great way to settle into the body and calm the system.

  • Reflect: Spend a few minutes journaling or reflecting on your day.
